Happy Blog Day 2007

Blog Day 2007

I have been silent for quite a while (a few things going on in life. More on that later.), so I almost forgot about Blog Day. However, I could not just let it pass. I suppose I could have picked more than five, but these are ones I have come to follow regularly. So here we go with my five choices for this year:

  • The Annoyed Librarian: Whether you agree or disagree with her, this pseudonymous librarian blogger always has something to say about libraries and librarianship (and a few other things). She questions and pokes fun at a lot of things in librarianship. Often, she will say things few, if any others, will say. More importantly, for me at least, reminds us that the profession should not be taking itself so seriously. A nice blend of argument and humor.
  • The Zenformation Professional: This is not just another librarian blog. Jason, the ZenFoPro, describes himself as "an intellectual freedom fighter and professional information bounty hunter." As he warns, it is not a professional blog. He is a good storyteller and great writer.
  • danah boyd (who blogs at Apophenia) and Fred Stutzman (who blogs at Unit Structures) are two people I read that explain social software very well. Whether it's Facebook or MySpace, when I need a good analysis or insight, I can count on these two bloggers.
  • The Rude Pundit: This is a political commentary blog, and it is not for the faint of heart. If you offend easily, then this is not for you. This blogger is "proudly lowering the level of political discourse." Given that political discourse now is not exactly at any high point, bringing it lower may not be a bad thing; it certainly gives him a lot of material. He can be funny, but he can also be reflective and moving. He definitely tells it like it is. I would have left him a comment on his blog, but as he says, "mostly, the Rude Pundit doesn't give a shit what you have to say. . . ." He does provide an e-mail though.

Added a book reader's widget

I have added the GoodReads widget to the sidebar of this blog (as well as over at The Itinerant Librarian). I got an invite to the site from one of my coworkers, and so far I have enjoyed its ease of use and adding in books I have read as well as those I plan to read. What may happen is that I may make less booknotes here. Basically, if it is a short "ya, I liked it" sort of note, I will just put it over there with the list. If I want to write some substantial response to the book, I will put it in here. Anyways, just part of the experiment.
